Abstract

The country’s higher education system is undergoing major changes, many of which are driven by university teaching staff. Teaching staff is one of the key performance indicators in higher education and is particularly important for state accreditation and university competitiveness. Considerable attention is paid to enhancing staff competence in educational, methodological, and research activities. Thus, changes in the academic environment are increasing psychosocial risks due to the growing workload of the teaching staff. In this context, lecturer burnout has become particularly relevant. The aim of this study is to provide both theoretical and practical explanations of the factors contributing to emotional and professional exhaustion among university lecturers. These factors are quite diverse and include heavy teaching load, a growing number of duties and responsibilities, insufficient time for professional preparation, and a lack of administrative support. A survey of faculty members in the department helped to identify specific factors and manifestations contributing to the emotional exhaustion and burnout of university lecturer. The obtained data made it possible to clarify theoretical provisions and expand the understanding of the mechanisms underlying this condition.
